Information on the City's recycling program

Recycling collection is provided on a bi-weekly basis the same day as residential refuse collection. To maximize the productivity of the recycling program, Solid Waste Management alternates the weeks of what is to be collected. One week, newspapers, junk mail, chipboard boxes (cereal, pasta, gift, etc.), and corrugated cardboard are collected. The next week, aluminum and tin cans, any color glass and plastics #1 thru #7 are collected. Tedious sorting by the citizen is not needed with this collection program.

Each resident may receive only two (2) recycling bins per household or tax map number. Additional bins may be provided only with the consent of a Supervisor. Citizens who reside in multi-unit dwellings and wish to recycle must contact the property owner. The property owner must then contact Solid Waste Management if they wish to provide their tenants with this service. Businesses that receive regular trash collection service with the City of Roanoke may receive recycling containers. This shall be at the discretion of the Recycling Supervisor.

All requests for recycling containers will be sent to the Solid Waste Management Container Distributor for appropriate action and tracking of the recycling containers in a database.
