How does the City handle missed brush collection?

Category: Brush Packer

Excessive brush on the City right-of-way is a violation of City code. Brush may be set out for collection as early as 7:00 pm on the eve of the scheduled collection day.  It must be set to the collection point no later than 7:00 am on the day of collection.  Tree branches and shrubbery can be placed at the street (no alley collection) on regular collection days. No branch can be longer than four feet and no more than three inches in diameter. One standard pickup truck load (4 ft wide x 4 ft long x 4 ft high) will be serviced per collection day.

Even if the citizen has placed his/her brush out, it may not be picked up under certain circumstances as follows:  1) Brush should not be more than 4’W x 4’L x 4’H, 3” in diameter pursuant City Code Sec. 14.1-23; 2) All bulk and brush items are serviced from the curb/street NOT the alley; 3) Bulk and brush are mixed and needs to be separated by the citizen; 4) Brush is too close to other items; 5) Brush is blocked by a vehicle; 6) Brush is not at the curb/street; 7) Brush is missed with loose trash; and 8) Brush is not clear from low wires. Under the aforementioned circumstances, Solid Waste Management will not come back out and pick up the brush.  It must be removed from the curb until the next brush collection cycle.

Throughout the course of their routes, Solid Waste Management drivers radio into operations staff and notify them of the addresses where there are issues about the location of the brush or the brush itself if there are reasons why it cannot be picked up.  Operations staff maintains daily reports with this information in order to respond to citizens who call in to say their brush was not collected.  If the driver did not call the non-service/missed collection into operations, a Solid Waste Management Supervisor will be sent out to investigate the citizen’s concerns and determine if a truck will be sent back out to collect the missed brush collection.
